MAY 2022 Exhibit
The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is pleased to feature the works of artist Lisa Schoen in this imaginative exhibit, entitled "Curving A Way", in The Gallery at Cherry Hill from April 28 - May 24, 2022.
An opening reception will take place at The Gallery at Cherry Hill, Thursday, May 5, 2022 from 7 - 9 p.m.
Featured works by artist Lisa Schoen include engaging pieces with mythological inspiration and the use of foam core as the medium to create strong contrast and bright, bold hues.
Schoen's selection of works incorporates foam core experimentation that had started as a structure for other sculpture mediums and inevitably allowed her to create new textures with different layers of the board. The simplicity of the black, white, and sometimes gray has appealed to her love of Asian comics, which largely rules her overall style of drawing figures. "When looking for topics for my pieces, I immediately turned to the mythology and fantasy stories I have always enjoyed. The foam core also worked well with the geometric design and line art that I previously used only in ink drawings," says Lisa Schoen. "My work has become a marriage of a fun, therapeutic method working in harmony with my preferred style and topics of art."
Born and raised in Michigan, Lisa Schoen grew up with a love for stories. Whether reading, watching or listening to stories being told, she was moved; especially by fictional, mystery, mythological, and in time, horror tales. Schoen's love of sharing stories led her toward a career in teaching and education.
In 2005, she jumped into her position as an art teacher, specializing in drawing, painting, comic art, and simple sculpting. She eventually began looking for a medium that would allow her to use her skills in a more unique way that also fit the budget of an educator. When a project resulted in some leftover foam core board, Schoen discovered - through a lot of trial-and-error - that different looks and textures could be achieved by peeling away different layers. The monochromatic nature of those first boards appealed to her love of Asian comic books and the carving process made for a delightfully destructive method that has become as much a stress reliever as a creative output. She immediately started pulling from her love of stories, especially from the mythologies of different cultures, to form the backbone of her collection of works. Schoen has been thrilled by the positive feedback she has received for her carvings thus far, and though it hasn't been easy balancing her calling as a teacher with finding the time for more personal creation, she is looking forward to sharing more of her work with a wider community.
